International Women’s Day Quiz, 09/03/2020 18:30 – 20:30 GMT
On Monday 9th March, only one day late, WISDOM held an International Women’s Day quiz!
This social event saw 4 teams battling to see who knew the most about Amelia Earhart, the structure of DNA, and how many episodes of Star Trek there have been (answer is a lot). It was lovely to see all sorts of Hollowegians in attendance, all the way from Faculty to undergraduate, and the whole quiz finished with a nail-biting tie-breaker, asking how many islands were in the Philippines.
Everyone left looking forward to next year’s International Women’s day!

When the thesis writing got hard, we introduced seated yoga! A session open to all, where we were shown breathing techniques, seated yoga movements and meditation to allow us to relax and get the most out of ourselves. This was a great opportunity to get away from the desk and do something active, without having to change clothes!

As the launch of WISDOM providing free emergency sanitary products throughout our building, we had our very own PhD student, Laura Shipp, give a talk about period poverty. The event was very informative and showed how important it is to provide menstrual products, to strive for menstrual equality.

We gave our members a chance to kick back and relax whilst enjoying pizza and an incredible film based on the struggles of three black women working for NASA. This event was very popular and there was a great atmosphere all evening – providing a comfortable and welcoming environment for all.

WISDOM held its annual Welcome Lunch to meet all the new students in our department.
Ada Lovelace Day Event, 11/10/2019 16:00-18:00 UTC
WISDOM ran a joint event with Women in Biology to celebrate Ada Lovelace and welcome new students to the department. We invited the LGBT+ Staff Network and RoWaN (Royal Holloway Women’s Network) to foster a sense of community. We had a great time running our ‘gender equality’ quiz – based on statistics of women in education. There was a great chance to get to know the new students and show them all the supportive groups we have available for postgraduates and staff.

The WISDOM Christmas Social and Networking event was held at Royal Holloway on December 7th. Speakers opened the event with discussions on diversity in STEM, particularly in Information Security and Mathematics. Thereafter, attendees had the chance to meet other colleagues over mulled wine and mince pies.
The theme of this event was ‘Community’, highlighting the importance of social support and the value of inclusion within a community. WISDOM has developed its own community over the years and this event is to continue developing the strengths in shared experiences, encouragement and inspiring strengths of our members.
MSc Networking Lunch, 01/11/2017 13:00-14:00 UTC
An informal Networking event to welcome the students of MSc at Royal Holloway over light lunch and non-alcoholic drinks. Guest speakers from the UK Government gave a short talk, discussing career opportunities in maths and cyber security as well as promoting gender equality and diversity as a whole.
Voice and Influence Program, 2017
The Voice & Influence program was developed by the Center for the Advancement of Women’s Leadership at Stanford University. RHUL participants met roughly every other week, starting Tuesday, 17 January, to work through this program, learning and discussing 11 topics. Each session started with a short (around 15-minute) video.
